These words from a prayer in the Puritan Valley of Vision ministered to my soul just now and reminded me of the precious promises of God, and that indeed, God is good and He does good (Ps 119:68). I found the last paragraph particularly poignant:
“O God,
Though I am allowed to approach Thee
I am not unmindful of my sins…
May I with Moses choose affliction rather than enjoy the pleasures of sin…
Thou has done for me all things well,
hast remembered, distinguished, indulged me.
All my desires have not been gratified,
but Thy love denied them to me
when fulfillment of my wishes would have
proved my ruin or injury.
My trials have been fewer than my sins,
and when I have kissed the rod it has fallen from Thy hands.
Thou has often wiped away my tears,
restored peace to my my mourning heart,
chastened me for my profit.
All Thy work for me is perfect,
and I praise Thee.”
Amen, and amen.
I am thankful to God for the timely reminder of His goodness and grace. All His work for me is perfect – he has done for me all things well. It is all for His glory and my good. It is good to have a sovereign Father who works all things for good – who “leads captivity captive” (Eph 4:8) and “neither sleeps nor slumbers”(Ps 121:4). May His name be praised for all His goodness!
