Resurrection Poem

One of my fellow seminarians at DTS (Morgan Reed) posted a poem by the holy Ephrem Syrus that he translated from Syriac. Two of the verses struck me and seemed a fitting meditation on Resurrection Sunday – so I wanted to share them with you:

5. From  the height, the Strong One came down to us.
And from within the womb, Hope came to us.
From the grave, Life rose for us.
And at the right hand, the King He sat for us.
Blessed is his greatness.

8. From the height He came down as the Lord
And from inside the womb He went out as a slave.
And death kneeled before Him in Sheol.
And by his resurrection, life worshipped him.
Blessed is His victory.

I love the image of life “rising” for us, as well as the picture of death “kneeling” to Christ. What a God we serve who has raised Jesus Christ from the dead, conquering death and bringing life in his holy name!

Χριστός ἀνέστη             (“Christ is risen!”)
Ἀληθῶς ἀνέστη       (“He is risen indeed!”)
